Lie To Me
"Are you alright?"
It was that question that Aoi found the most annoying. Everyone had been constantly asking him this, and he knew that they meant well, but repeating the same answers over and over to everyone was beginning to irritate him. He nodded before taking his seat beside Kenzo.
The bar wasn't very crowded yet, and not everyone they were meeting had turned up just yet. So far, it was Aoi, Kenzo, Aki and Takehito. They were waiting on Mao.
Aki had asked the question, since the bands had not seen each other since before... that. Aoi didn't want to think about it, nor speak of it. It was too painful.
Yet, he told everyone he was fine now, and he knew everyone didn't really believe him, but they took his word for it. "If you say so..." was the reply everyone gave when he had nodded or gave a simple 'yes'. He never gave a longer answer.
Kenzo and Takehito had already begun drinking, looking like they hadn't been to a bar in forever, and Aki grabbed for Kenzo's arm, tugging on the jacket he was wearing.
"Started without me?" Mao's voice came, and they all looked up to see his smiling face. Takehito shifted closer to Aki to make room for the other vocalist, squishing Aki against Kenzo.
As Mao took his place, Aoi's eyes made contact with his for a brief few seconds. He couldn't tell what Mao was thinking.
The night went on, talking about the usual and ordering more rounds of alcohol, though Aoi wasn't drinking too much. His line of vision stayed focused on Mao. He was waiting to be asked the question.
The bar was now filled with smoke, the stench gripping on to everyone's clothing and hair, though the boys didn't mind. Takehito had already pulled out his cigarettes and lighter.
"Mao?" he offered, and SID's vocalist shook his head with a polite smile. "I'm alright," he answered, taking a swig out of his mug. Takehito didn't have to offer to Kenzo or Aki. They already took one each.
Aoi shook his head before it was even offered to him, pushing his drink away and getting up. "I'm going outside for a bit."
Eyes darted to Mao for a second, though the other seemed to be distracted by something across the room.
Cold air hit his face as he set foot outdoors, and people walked past in pairs, chattering because of the cold weather, and because it was late. Walking a little to where there was less light, Aoi found himself walking on broken pieces of glass towards an alleyway, his boots crushing the small pieces in to dust.
Shadows hid him as his back collided with a brick wall, and an impatient sigh escaped him.
"You're not yourself tonight..." came Mao's voice, startling him a bit. The other vocalist stood in front of him, an expression of worry taunting his features. Aoi only shrugged, looking at the dark ground.
Silence.
Aoi waited for the question to come. Ten minutes had passed and not one of them had moved, apart from the occasional shiver caused by the wind. It was driving him insane. Mao was driving him insane.
He wanted him to ask, to pity, to tell him that it would be okay. Yet he wasn't.
"Let's go back inside," the other man took a step to turn, but not before Aoi grabbed hold of the back of his jacket, causing him to look back.
A look of curiosity. Not what he wanted.
"What is it?" Mao asked, waiting for Aoi to speak. His grip loosened.
"Why aren't you asking if I'm okay?" he let go as he asked, so that the other could turn to face him again.
Aoi let his eyes lock on to Mao's, chocolate orbs unreadable, and Aoi became more frustrated.
"Do you want me to?" Mao asked, after a few seconds, and the other only stared. "Do you want me to be like everyone else? Does it matter that I even bother asking when you're just going to lie and nod?"
His calm voice flared with anger. "You're turning into a hypocrite. You, Aoi, hate liars. Yet you're lying to everyone."
The words coming from his mouth shocked him. He didn't expect Mao to be so upset over him just for lying about how he felt. Aoi could feel his tears dampen his cheeks; their eyes never broke contact. Yet the look in those eyes remained the same.
"Why are you lying?" Mao demanded to know in a soft voice. "Just because everyone wants to see you happy doesn't mean you have to be," he took a step closer to Aoi, pulling the smaller vocalist in for an embrace. "It won't be okay yet. I won't lie to you. I never will, Aoi."
Aoi had let himself go as soon as Mao had wrapped his arms around his neck; pouring his grief unto the taller vocalist and dampening his shoulder. Hands fisting the smooth fabric as he held on, trying to pull Mao closer for more comfort and sobbing uncontrollably.
"If it won't be okay," the brunette sniffed after long minutes of being held. "What are you going to say to me, then?" he wanted to know.
The grip around his waist slightly tightened as Mao pulled him a little closer and rubbed his back soothingly, turning his head slightly so his lips were at Aoi's ear.
"I'll help you through this."
